Well I've seen it happen countless times. Maybe it's more of a Hardcore thing, and the promoter's seen that and thought, "Ah that's a good idea".
There is nothing wrong with it. It's completely accurate. Residencies aren't always a fit, as not all events have residents. I'm sure the events/venues enjoy the free promotion anyway.
There is nothing illegal or inaccurate with what the promoter has done here. Saying that a connected event MUST be a residency is of personal opinion.

OK, what is the reason a DJ would want to list a club or promotion on a flyer, alongside their name?
I presume it's to boost their perceived standing, "Oh, this DJ has played at MoS so they must be good!" - Right?
So, 2 points:
Where do you draw the line with this association?
DJ1 has been a resident for years, they play every week or month so I'd say that's a good recommendation.
DJ2 plays for a well known promotion and plays whenever the promotion hosts a room - another good recommendation although I'd expect the promotion to be listed rather than the club.
DJ3 has played a couple of times, for mates, in the warm-up slot. He wasn't very good so wasn't booked again - is that OK?
DJ4 played when the club was closed, messing around with his mate who's the sound engineer...
You see where I'm going with this...?
The second point is trademarks... I'd be prepared to bet MoS is a registered trademark so actually you are infringing their intellectual property which whilst not "illegal" is a civil matter and you could be asked to remove it.
We're not telling you it's illegal, it probably happens, but I'd take issue that there's nothing wrong or it's completely accurate, nor that events/venues would welcome the free promotion without being asked beforehand.
One final thought - I wonder if you're looking at small promoters and their tactics? I wonder if their stance changes when they grow and they have a name to protect

If a club doesn't want to be associated with a DJ, then booking them won't help the association. Once you've played somewhere, you are entitled to use that as self promotion.

To a degree yes. You can never unplay there so putting it on a bio is acceptable, in the same way you can put a job you were sacked from on you CV. Whether you agree or not, and I couldn't give a fuck either way, putting it on a flyer denotes an actual association with the event. I have told you, Matt has told you and if there were any other promoters around right now they would tell you as well.

I have been careful not to distance myself from what is going on here, but the promoter put Ministry Of Sound on the flyer off his own back, after reading one of my bios. It gives his event stature and credibility.
|
|
Does it give it credibility? To me it smacks of desperation. Especially as you're not a known MoS DJ.

You're entitled to put what you want on a flyer, as long as you're not moving against someone's copyright. If I hadn't played at Ministry, then there would be a problem!

What utter nonsense. So what is stopping a person from putting an event they've never even played for on there? If, as you say, you're not using their copyright?

Well I'm certainly not out to cause problems here. I've always understood that stating previous events played at is a standard way of promotion.
