It's been an eventful 12 months for hard dance's golden boy BK - the genre's first artist album came in the form of his superb KlubKollaborations EP, which touched on techno, hard house, hard trance, and mixtures of all three styles, and featured the creme-de-la-creme of hard dance, with artists such as Lab 4 and Paul Glazby conspiring with him to create truly memorable dancelfoor bombs. He has mixed several Extreme Euphoria compilations with outstanding results, parted company with Nukleuz (the DJ Agency and record label which provided him with the chance to break into the world of DJing and production in a big way) and started Riot! Recordings with Ed Real. In addition he has continued his storming residency at London's number one day party Riot!, destroyed dancefloors around the globe, as well as having notched up another few excellent productions along the way, such as the awesome techno-powerhouse 'Insane', and his forthcoming belter with Paul Masterson 'Charming'.

His sets have recently been encompassing a much wider range of material than previously, getting through techno, hard house and hard trance in the space of one set. In preparation for his not-to-be-missed 3 hour set at Lashed on November 5th (when have you ever heard of him doing such a set??), I set it to the Harderfaster massive to put forward any burning questions they might have for the legend that is BK. Here's what happened!
Have you made any tunes in the last 5 years that you look back on and think – ‘what a pile of crap!’? (benz)
Yeah of course a few and a few dodgy remixes! The funny thing is that often they are the ones that people love.
If you lost your arms in a tragic accident what would you do – would you still produce and would you create the first decks that were foot operated? (kimba_lee)
Well my keyboard playing would suffer quite a bit. I think I’d give up the DJing; carrying records would be to much of a pain in the arse. Maybe i could carry on producing i could get a touch screen and program with my nose and change my name to Armless van Keenon.
If you had to eat only one thing for the rest of his life, what would it be? (kimba_lee)

Did you ever think you would make it this big in dance music? (Candi)
No not at all. I wanted it so much that I spent 4 years of 7 days a week often starting at 7am and finishing at 1am in the morning at a studio were i learnt to engineer and program.
Then i got into hard house at Trade years ago and it was the music i fell in love with. At the time I was making tunes to be played at Trade and taking them down for Ian, Tony, Pete and Steve to play there. There wasn’t really any other clubs playing it so I never imagined doing it full time, most of us still had day jobs back then, even Tony. Then the sound moved into other scenes and Pete and Tony were playing everywhere and exposed my tunes to different scenes outside of Trade and from there the production just kinda grew.
I did another 3 years of 7 days a week producing for Nukleuz and DJing at the week-ends. At the beginning I never used to DJ that much, I was the stand in at Trade when someone was ill or couldn't make it i used to fill in and things just got busier and busier and here i am now.
What else do you do when you aren’t busy with music? (Luke Warner)
Sleep and do interviews. I don’t have much time do much else at the moment. I’m afraid I’m struggling to stay awake. I’ve just done a 27hr plane journey from Australia then had to go straight to the Ministry to do an interview about the new Extreme Euphoria CD.
What are your future plans? (Luke Warner)
I want to carry on developing my music. One of the main attractions for hard house was the fact not a lot of people were making it. When I first started to do the Hard Beat series I wanted to try and make records that stood out and had their own sound. As soon as people started to make the same kind of tunes it lost its appeal to me. So through Riot! I want to try different things out for a bit; they might work they might not, but that for me is the only way to push things forward. I can’t keep making the same old hard house tunes just because thats the easy option.

You've been some sort of inspiration to just about everybody who has made it into the scene in the last couple of years. Who was yours, and where do you look now for inspiration? (Mash Gordon)
Going to Trade was a major inspiration as well as The Prodigy. Nowadays anything can inspire from pop to rock. It’s funny, the older you get the more open minded you become.
Are you excited about playing a 3 hour set at Lashed on November 5th? What can we expect? Plenty of tough techno tackle? Any surprises?? (benz)
Yeah it will be great. You can expect a bit of everything I like building sets. I’m not a fan of these one hour sets, it’s not a challenge. I’ve got some tasty techno bits and I’m going up into the loft to find a great classic.
What are your top 5 tunes? (Richard Launch) (this question was non-specific so feel free to give your top 5 current, all-time, trance, etc tunes...any will do!)
I hate this question because there are so many good tunes from different genres. Here are 5 that i have lost it to on the dance floor. But there are others I like equally.
Tony de Vit "Are You Ready" (I was at Trade the first time Tony played this out)
Prodigy "No Good Start The Dance" (lost the plot to this at an illegal wharehouse rave in East London when the played live)
Marmian "Schoneberg" (Blue Peter used to cane this tune at Garage at Heaven this is where the React label sprung from)
Tony de Vit "i dont care" (again lost it to this at trade loads)
Commander Tom "RMI" (Ian used to cane this at Trade and he was the first DJ I ever heard play it)
CDs or vinyl - which do you prefer to mix with? What do you think of their growing popularity and the advancement of CD mixing technology? (bunny)
Don’t mind really. I prefer vinyl for techno as you don’t have to wait for CDs to load.
What do you think will have changed in clubland by this time next year? (t419kgo)
I think line-ups will become more varied like they used to be lots of DJs playing different styles.

His latest Extreme Euphoria compilation was recently released and looks like a belter, including a good few of his new productions. So the next stage for BK? World domination outside the hard dance scene? His love of techno could lead to even bigger things for him if he plays his cards right. For the meantime, catch him at Riot! at The End on 31st October, and of course that 3-hour set at Lashed on November 5th - it's a rare occasion to hear him play a lengthy set which will no doubt be a real musical journey. Miss it at your peril.
